The Idea

Experience Booklet has been a sandbox in learning how to leverage a community not just in a digital way, but in a physical way that could be experiential all year long, and supported small businesses at the same time. Experience Booklet is at its simplest form - a coupon book. Much like those we grew up with in our parents glove compartment, only this one didn't weight 4 pounds. Created as a way to directly support small businesses across the city in a unified way. Each page was a one time redeemable free item from the participating business. Free to the business to be apart of, and meant to serve as an excuse to explore your city more than you ever have before. When redeemed, the business would validate the page much like a real passport and users would usually document their experience socially given how hands on everything was. We wanted to create as many physical touch points as possible for the user.

The hurdles

We live in a world that is slowly turning more and more digital. As a result, we are loosing some of that physical magic we all grew up with. We see the resurgence of this magic through things like vinyl, and 90's collectables. Many people when hearing about the concept would quickly tell me how it needed to be digital for ease of use. The idea of a physically shipped booklet you had to carry around with you, scared most people. But in turn what I realized was people cherished this small moment of authentic magic in that small package. There is a value that was placed on it, simply because it could be held in your hand. Our digital world has watered down the magic that is exploration, but by returning that to the user, we are able to give the magic in a real tangible way back to them. No matter how much the booklet is worth from a value perspective, it will always be worth more emotionally because of the physicality of it.

Looking back on it all

Over the last 4 years, this booklet has seen many iterations. It has expanded to 3 different markets - Nashville, Kansas City, and Portland. We have built relationships with hundreds of influencers, and thousands of customers. We have done giveaways with local businesses, scavenger hunts, golden tickets, art projects and more. We have collaborated with businesses on a real genuine equal playing field. We have supported hundreds of small businesses by bringing in thousands of new faces through their doors. I'm so proud of what this has become, and I hope the new ownership can continue to take it far.
